Are You Proud to Be An American?

The original "three musketeers", Myrna on the left, me in the middle, and Ruth on the right. This was in 1961 when we graduated from William H. Maxwell Vocational High School in Brooklyn, NY. Myrna just sent me this picture and I thank her. Memories!!

1961 in the studio recording our first album. There were six of us including Phil Spector. Barbara (me) top left, Phil Spector behind me), Dee Dee middle center, La La behind Dee Dee and Mary far right sitting. Sitting below left to right is Patsy and Myrna. After Myrna left to get married, we settled with the original five as shown above. Myrna did a few record hops and our very first live performance at the Apollo in Harlem before she left. La La came on board permanently after that.

One of our first record hops with Gene Kaye who was displaying our very first album, Uptown. I think there was a birthday party there and that's why we were wearing those hats. Mary was the next to leave and we decided to stay with the four of us instead of adding another girl. Patsy and I used to argue with Dee Dee and La La all the time, but when we hit that stage, we were one. We really did care about each other. Fippy replaced Patsy temporarily and went with us to Hawaii. Dee Dee took the picture after the Hawaiian representatives gave us a lea to welcome us to their beautiful state.
When we got back from Hawaii, we acquired Frances Collins who officially replaced Patsy and stayed with us until the group dispersed in the late 60s. We all remember not having our shoes for this gig in New Zealand. I believe the shoes didn't make it off the plane if I remember correctly. When I left, it was just Dee Dee, Frances, and La La. Ronnie was their guitarist. He was a real good guy and I missed all of them.
After the group broke up totally, Arthur managed to get the three of us together in early 72 and we decided to revive The Crystals and go back on the road. Remember this one girls? We were being interviewed for a record we had just recorded with Billy Pemberton named "Ring-a-ting-a-ling".  Another photo with the final three where we were receiving an award from the military to show their appreciation of our performance.

Dee Dee (center) kept the group going after Mary and I left in the mid-70s. The new girls are Patricia (left) and Melissa (right) and their new CD is a re-recording of some of our greatest hits and other hits of that era. The CD is entitled "All Class" which is representative of The Crystals at all times! Arthur Pemberton was our driver for many years. Arthur taught me how to drive and he took very good care of the group as a whole. He will always be a very good friend to all of us. Hi, Arthur! Edgar Ballance, who saved his own life by "never missing a meal", he said, drove for us for a short period of time. He was a gentle soul and a good friend.

At the Hall of Fame in Chicago when the Girl Group Stamps were unveiled. I saw people I hadn't seen in years. Wow! Again at the Hall of Fame. This project was hosted by Mary Wilson of the Supremes and she did a wonderful job. Wow!

The stamp itself!!!
Not many people wind up on a stamp. I feel very privileged.
